I decided to write about time as opposed to some more depressing political news such as the stupid and offensive comments of Congressman Todd Akin, Missouri Republican, regarding how he was against abortion for cases of rape because “the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down” to prevent pregnancy. I don’t want to waste our valuable time together.
We are all in such a rush and if you could think back for a moment to your youth. I remember long summer days playing baseball and basketball. Every so often a trip to the beach was a real treat as long as I could escape my parents. These summers seemed to go on forever and I loved every minute of them.
Today, we are constantly preparing for the future. High school, college, jobs, the next relationship, the next marriage, the next baby, the next divorce, our health, retirement and we are all awaiting for time to catch up to us and kill us. In comes, the smiling mortician.
I don’t often quote a Star Trek movie but this is a good one. Captain Jean-Luc Picard said, “Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives. I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey and reminds us to cherish every moment, because it will never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we’ve lived. After all Number One, we’re only mortal.”
I have been close to death twice in my life and I am still learning to cherish every moment. As someone who cares deeply about the human condition and our environmental stewardship, it is very difficult for me to not think about the past and the future. But, I know the moments when I have been in the present, are the most special to me. Do you have those moments? Here are some of mine…
- The birth of my children.
- The first kiss when you realize you are in love.
- Hitting a home run to win the game or the Phillies winning the World Series.
- Just being with a friend and laughing about life.
- Sharing an amazing sunset or a beautiful sunrise.
- Cooking a romantic meal with that special someone.
- Making a difference in your work and in people’s lives.
- Helping someone to find their own voice.
- Loving and laughing with your children.
- Playing with my granddaughters.
- A shooting star.
These moments often do not last very long but when you string them together they become a lifetime to cherish and love. Time is our friend reminding us to celebrate the present. So, as Spock of Star Trek says, “Live long and prosper.”
